Voices of Holocaust History: Leisl Tells Her Story

Liesl Joseph Loeb was one of 300 children aboard the German ocean liner SS St. Louis, sailing from Hamburg in May 1939 with 936 passengers who hoped to seek temporary refuge in Cuba. Liesl tells students of the journey and the denial of entry into Cuba. Viewers learn of the response of the United States government and the ship’s sorrowful return to Europe. The journey is recounted with a photo of Liesl and her father in the book Voyage of the Damned by Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan Witts.
